In 2019, I presented a talk at the Senior Care 360 conference in Washington DC on the new Death Doula Profession. Everyone loved it!

This conference brought together elder care organisations (home care, hospices, etc.) from all over the country. Everyone is concerned about the "Elder Care Crisis" we have going on right now that our mainstream medical system cannot support.

The great news is that there are now Death Doulas and Doulagiver Specialists "Filling the Gap" in care. 💜

We now have our Professional Doulagivers in Hospices, home health agencies, assisted living homes and my favourite- private practice💕💕💕

When is this day celebrated? April 20!!!!

What is Death Doula Day?

The day is set aside for Death Doulas to engage their communities bringing awareness to the profession and benefits for patients and families. An End of Life Doula is a non-medical person trained to care for someone holistically (physically, emotionally, and spiritually) at the end of life. End of Life Doulas are also known around the world as: end of life coaches, soul midwives, transition guides, death coaches, death doulas, doula to the dying, end of life doulas, death midwives, thanadoula, and end of life guides. Death Doula Day is a day where we recognize the positive impact these individuals can have during the end of life process.💕

This day is created to raise awareness about the profession of Death Doulas and how they can benefit patients and families at end of life. Death Doulas provide the additional support that families need in order to feel comfortable with taking care of their dying loved one at home. They are non-medical professionals that provide holistic support for the dying and their loved ones before, during, and after death. Trained in the various end of life stages, a Doula is able to assist the family with understanding the natural processes while providing comfort and support.

This is the day where all Death Doulas can rise together and be a voice for social change at the end of life, ensuring everyone has the most positive passing possible. 🌎🙌🙏

How should this day be celebrated or observed? On Death Doula Day we encourage the conversation about the profession of Death Doulas. This can be done anywhere. Have fun with it! Post/tweet/market/share, have a discussion panel, show a documentary, give a training, host a Death Café – Anything to do with the end of life.🙏

If your loved one received a terminal diagnosis today, would you know how to care for them? The answer is usually always no- yet as a former hospice nurse, we expect families to do just that.

100 years ago, caring for the dying was a skill handed down generationally. Today, it is all but lost. The removal of this skill is causing end of life to be 1000x more difficult for both the patient and the family.

FREE DEATH DOULA TRAINING FOR FAMILIES ON APRIL 20TH 💜

At a time when death and grief seem to loom over our daily lives, one organization hopes to allay the fear and anxiety most people associate with dying by offering free training in a long-lost skill: caring for a loved one at end-of-life.

On April 20, 2021, the third annual Doulagivers World Training Day will bring thousands of people together in free virtual workshops to learn caregiver skills for facilitating a peaceful final passage -- from helping a loved one draw up a living will, designate a health proxy, and create an advanced directive to arranging goodbye conversations with family and friends. So far, more than 60 free webinar events will be hosted in over 10 countries including the US, Canada, Uruguay, the Philippines, England and Nicaragua. Anyone can sign up for the free events www.worldtrainingday.org.
As a hospice nurse visiting dying patients just one once a week to provide medical care if they were stable, O’Brien knew that much of the burden fell on family members who tended to dying loved ones throughout each day, usually with no training or experience. She founded the International Doulagivers Institute in 2008 to provide holistic training for professional death doulas as well as family and friends who want to learn how to care for a dying loved one.

Since then, more than 100,000 people have participated in the organization’s basic family caregiver training, including more than 8,000 who have participated in World Training Day since 2019. For many, the experience transformed their expectations and experiences of death; one woman, Mary (whose last name is being withheld for personal reasons), said the training allowed her to bring peace to her dying grandmother by helping her to fill out a living will, prioritize her wishes amid family turmoil, and take control over her end-of-life journey.

“A hundred years ago, end-of-life care was a skill that was handed down from generation to generation,” said O’Brien. “Our goal is to give these skills back 🙏

As we approach the year anniversary of the first r

As we approach the year anniversary of the first recorded Covid death in NYC, I am honored to be offering a very special Doulagivers Life Cafe for families of those who have lost someone during this time 🙏

March 14th @ 12pm ET I will host a special NY Day of Remembrance LIFE CAFE for families live online where we will hold space to honor all those who have been affected by covid 19. To share in truly "seeing and hearing" one another. I will also be sharing tools to help with the grieving process especially when it is complicated grief where they very well may not have been able to be with their loved ones at the end of life and may not have been able to have a traditional funeral ceremony.

Please join us in nonjudgmental loving community💜
